In 2018, “The History of Production Furniture” was launched to trace the evolution of furniture from cave-people to today’s world. Dubbed the “Flintstones to the Jetsons,” the course is an interactive learning experience that uses the arts, historical people, and film to add cultural depth to the understanding of furniture and world of design. While it is mostly taught virtually, field trips to places like the Eames, Gehry, and Schindler houses of LA provides an additional connection to good design. As of Spring 2024 it will be the 18th time the class is taught to undergrad and graduate students. All class evaluations are available here.
In 2019, “Classroom to Career” was developed for graduate students to prepare for the transition between degree work and their careers. Awareness of industry best-practices, branding yourself, and the various business and design opportunities of the industry are covered. Legal knowledge is taught by Joel Delman. This is a virtual class.
